Objectives

We succeed only as we identify in life, or in war, or in anything else, a single overriding objective, and make all other considerations bend to that one objective.

If you don't want your job or business to get to the point where it's just work or is some soul sucking thing you have to do to just live take heed to the above quote.

Really, everything you do should fit into your overriding objective.

Don't have an overriding objective.  Great!  You now know what you're top priority should be.

Don't kid yourself.  Coming up with an overarching goal IS work.  It's work that most people don't do for whatever reason.

A goal book is one of the few things I always carry around with me.  I'm always asking where I'm at in terms of my goals and constantly thinking about whether the goals I have are still what I want.  I'm also growing the list.

No idea where to begin?  Just write something dumb down.  It's better to have something than nothing.  Moreover, the more you just do it the easier it gets and the better you get at it.

Measure of Success

There are a few variants of the following floating around
What gets measured gets managed - Peter Druker
What gets measured gets accomplished
These quotes get at something fundamental.  They remind us to constantly try to figure out if what we're doing is actually moving us towards our goals.

More than that, they force is to evaluate just how effectively our actions are moving us forward.

If you measure then you end up with a number of some kind.  Those numbers can then be compared allowing you to choose the most effective action.

If you haven't tried an action then, of course, you won't have a number.  So these quotes also remind us to experiment.

It's always amazing that such a short easy to remember quote can deliver so much value by keeping us focused on the right things

Mistakes

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.
-Dan Stanford

We don't always get what we want and the process of meditating what went wrong is where the real pay off occurs.

You learn so much more from mistakes.  They're the loudest signal you can get that there is something to learn here!

So often we try to forget them and move on but that itself is a mistake.

Remember if you're in a bad situation, your thoughts and actions leading up to that situation are the reason your in the situation... "suspect both" as Grant Cardone frequently says.

So take a moment and reflect, analyze and learn then move on.  Boil down the mistake to its root(s).

Dwelling

I know for sure that what we dwell on is who we become. -Oprah Winfrey

I know we've been harping on attention and obsession lately... well for a good reason.

There are a thousand and one variants of that Oprah quote.  All successful people have a version of this.

What we dwell upon is what/who we become.  What we give our attention to is what we get.  What it was all I was thinking about, that's when it happened. &c.

It's the truth and I think fundamental human truths are worth repeating.

Steve Jobs often said someone has to be the keeper and reiterator of the mission/values etc.  The same is true of this thing called obsession, dwelling on, attention...

Hone your laser focus.

Right now at 10distilled were laser focused on where to go next.  What to do next.  How to do the next thing.  I think that focus will yield better and better content in the future.

You are what you're working on.

If you want to know something about a person ask them what are they working on.  What have they done yesterday, today, the last few hours.

You'll notice right away the time element to those questions.

If you finger painted as a kid but haven't done anything since... you're not an artist.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. -Bruce Lee
Let's adjust that quote a little.  Fear the man who practices that kick that kick everyday.

If you're not obsessing over your work and haven't done anything with it in a while... guess what.

I don't even need to tell you what you already know.  But ponder it today and use it to not only get back on the right track but also start chugging down it towards you're goal.

Most people spend a lot of time getting on the track that will lead to the goal they want... but never proceed down it.  Just sitting on the track and never moving is pointless.

Also remember that trains are not teleporters, you're not going to suddenly appear at your destination instantly.  You have to keep chugging down the line day in and day out until you get there.  You may find that there is a better track to switch to down the line but you never stop moving.

After completing our blue light therapy article we suddenly realized that a lot of the work we had been doing wasn't moving us forward.  It was more "getting on the right track" kind of work.  That needs to stop... time to get moving again.

We're going to start cranking out content again.  Hang on tight.

Feel the Fear and Do it Anyways

Feel the Fear and Do it Anyways

I'm not sure where I first heard this quote but everytime a person grows they're always doing something uncomfortable.

Grant Cardone calls this staying dangerous.  He doesn't mean doing things that are so crazy that you're constantly suffering disastrous results.

Usefully, you can usually tell when you're stagnating by how comfortable you are.

Don't rest on your laurels!

We're going to be pushing in new directions and marching forward with new technology here at 10distilled.  Extending the content in new and useful ways and that can be a uncomfortable.  However it is necessary.

We've already started in some of those directions.  For example, SAD lights we're something that we were asked about but initially didn't think would be a good fit.  However, the result was a new style and much higher quality.

Growing pains are the price of growing.

Stay strong and stay dangerous.

Quality

Never read a book through merely because you have begun it.
-John Witherspoon

It's quality evaluation time here at 10distilled!

We're going back through older content judging it.  You might see a few pages change as a result.

This isn't going to be a re-evaluation of the rankings... they still stand.  Instead we'll be looking at the structure of the posts, the style, and most importantly the quality of the content.

The question always should be how much value are we delivering.  If it's zero then there is no point to having 10distilled around.  However, I don't think that's the case.  I think the work we've done has value and that there will always be a need for someone or some group to sit down and digest the purchasing options that are out there.

So how can you help?  Run over to 10distilled.com and leave a comment.  Seriously, we read them and take what you say to heart.
